2006 Governor's Golf & Fishing Classic
The 10th Annual Governor's Golf & Fishing Classic, held June 2 & 3, at Rolling Meadows Golf Course and at Milford Lake proved to be successful. The Kansas Wildscape Foundation and the City of Junction City coordinated the activities for this annual fundraising event.
The Golf Tournament Winners of the three flight, four-person scramble were; First Flight 1st Place Jack Taylor, Roland Wachtner, Steve Rosler, Mike Younkin 59, 2nd Place Mike Rhodes, B. Bish, Ken Dillion, Danny Devin 60, 3rd Place Rob Patton, Brad Mitchell, Roc Platt, Tom Garretson 62, Second Flight 1st Place Don Dowdall, Dusty Sweeney, Terry Canady, Dave Hurley II 65, 2nd Place Junction City Chamber of Commerce 65, 3rd Place Mike Vineyard, Jim Huntington, Bob Beachy, Max Moss, Wil Momsen 66, Third Flight 1st Place Diana Phillip-Keefe, Ray Iharra, George Zumley, Steve Hoambreker 72, 2nd Place Terry Heldstab, Randy Heldstab, Darrel McCaleb, Monte Dibben 72, 3rd Place Stan Frownfelter, Dan Coffey, Val Schmitz, Bill Brannan 72. First Place teams received $1,000 cash, second place teams received $500 cash, and third place teams received $250 cash. Hole-in-one prizes included a free one-year lease on a vehicle from Dick Edwards Auto Plaza of Junction City, and a Nitro boat, provided by The Boathouse & RV Center in Topeka. The Junction City Police Dept. provided and served lunch at the tournament, the Junction City Chamber of Commerce sponsored a BBQ dinner. Evening festivities included a silent and live auction featuring artwork, golfing and fishing packages, outdoor gear, and celebrity-autographed memorabilia. The Junction City Generals gave tickets to all the participants to come and watch their opening game that evening.
The Fishing Tournament started in the early morning on June 3rd with biscuits & gravy provided by the JCGC Economic Development (EDC). Participants included 27 soldiers from Fort Riley. Kansas Wildscape once again dedicated the Classic to our men and women serving, who are stationed at Fort Riley. The Soldiers were able to fish for free through paid sponsorships, and some of them were in winning boats! This year's fishing winners for catching the largest Wiper were Guide Roy Roper and Sergeant Craig Klukas, their fish weighed 5.18 lbs. The Largest Walleye weighed 2.77 lbs. and was brought in by Guide Mike Schnbel and Soldiers Ron Davis & Allen Wilson. The Paper Tournament winners caught 66 Fish! Marc Murrell Guided Soldiers Bob St Louis & James Gravil. Each person received a $100 gift certificate and plaques! The defending Champions Won the Governor's Cup Again with a Smallmouth Bass weighing 3.67 lbs. This year Guide Stan Byquist caught the fish while Steve Wilcoxson & Tom Kreiser took the pictures! They also received plaques and $100 certificates. Guide Stan Byquist, also received $500 cash for being the guide of the winning boat! Each guide donated their services, boat and tackle. The Coleman Company donated a personal cooler for each guide and soldier that participated, and Guides also received a set of binoculars donated by Bushnell!
Members of the Salina Bass Masters Club are already gearing up for next year's event! Six of their members participated this year including the Governor's Cup Winner Stan Byquist. The others included Jason Heis, Steve Johnson, John Ekland, Mike Blaha, and Rob Hague. The club would like to find sponsors to put soldiers in their boats next year!
